The Devil in the White City
Just read this book for the second time with the Topeka Book Club. Erik Larson is a fantastic story teller and an impressive researcher. The real-life drama, engineering, and politics that swirled around the architects/artists that created the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair: Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Frederick Law Olmsted, John Root...the young Frank Lloyd Wright is even involved. And I haven't yet mentioned the architectural marvel designed to "out-Eiffel Eiffel", the first Ferris wheel. And that is only half the story—woven throughout is the second true story about a nearby psychopath/doctor/swindler/serial-killer.

The Seven Storey Mountain
An autobiographical journey from an intellectual worldly life to a Trappist monastery. Son of an artist and heir of a wealthy grandfather, Merton experienced England, France, and Rome during his childhood (1920s and 1930s). At 18 he entered Cambridge where his life began to seriously unravel. Believing America would offer him a new start, he then moved to New York and entered Columbia College. His Catholic journey of faith began during his graduate days at Columbia and eventually led to his acceptance into the Trappist community of The Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky.

Where Love Is, There God Is Also
This title recently caught my eye on the sign of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka. A short-shory set in Tolstoy’s late nineteenth century Russia. An old shoemaker named Avdyeitch “began to think more about his soul, and get nearer to God.” In a dream, the Lord comes to him and tells the shoemaker, “I shall come tomorrow”. The entire next day old Avdyeitch is eagerly looking for the Lord’s arrival as various local people enter into the story. Read this 17 page story for free at Google books to find out how it ends.

She’s Come Undone
Topeka Book Club’s May selection. Walk half-a-lifetime with Dolores Price, beginning in the 1950’s, through a traumatic and tragic childhood and then into an adulthood of mental illness and more trauma. I enjoyed the Americana nostalgia in the first third of the book, but the constant foul-language and overdone sexuality spoiled this novel for me.

Gene Wilder stars in this musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book of the same name. Willy Wonka, the owner of a highly successful chocolate factory shuts it down because of spies trying to steal his secret recipes. He later resumes operations with a group of secret workers and a completely locked-down operation. Eventually, the eccentric and paranoid Mr. Wonka decides to run a worldwide contest to admit five winners to a tour of the factory. Charlie, a good boy from a poor family is one winner, the other four are indulged, spoiled, children with bad tempers. We’re then admitted into the interior regions of Mr. Wonka’s breathtaking and bizarre candy-making enterprise accompanied by a series of satirical events precipitated by bad and obnoxious behavior.

The major characters of the original story are present including the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Blue Caterpillar, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and the Mad Hatter. The visual interpretation of the Cheshire Cat, the 3D imaging of the Blue Caterpillar, and the Mad Hatter’s performance were my highlights.

The Wager (2008)
Just days before the Academy Awards a personal storm of hurricane proportions slams into the life of Los Angeles film-star Michael Steele (Randy Travis). Some of the trouble grew out of clouds he seeded, but much of its power came from other sources. As wave after wave pounds him, he clings to his faith, and then presses on bolstered by his agent.

Being an LA dweller, I especially enjoyed the local filming which included places like Ventura Blvd., the Dream Center, and Angelus Temple. Also of great interest was the relentless paparazzi pursuit. In one scene, Michael loses his cool for a moment and physically lashes out. This prompted a good discussion for me and a friend: “What do you think Jesus would have done in that situation?”

I did have a hard time believing such a “perfect storm” of events could really coalesce (it happened to Job though) and some of it felt a bit contrived. For me though, that wasn’t the point. What I found helpful were the gritty situations, the vivid portrayal of misunderstanding and pre-judgment and the damage that follows, courage, sacrifice, and redemption.
